Class Descriptions

Our classes were designed to provide the resources, tools and support needed so that you can live a balanced and healthy life.  At Alta Wellness, we understand that life can have its challenges and sometimes you need a safe space and support in overcoming them.  Our approach is a blend of psychological tools, mindfulness and support, empowering participants to live by design, rather than by default.  The classes can be taken either independently or in combination as part of a “Self-Help” program designed to meet your specific situation and needs.

Resilience and Overcoming Setbacks

Life has a way of “knocking us down” or “setting us back,” creating fear and anxiety, or leaving us feeling confused and overwhelmed.  Learn how to identify what has worked and has not worked as well.  Learn strategies for coping  and empowerment that can keep you going and help you overcome obstacles. Receive support from others as you surmount your hurdles.

Dealing with Depression

Depression can make you feel lonely, isolated, and frustrated; creating stress and deepening feelings of low self-worth.  Learn strategies that you can implement to alleviate negative thoughts and feelings.  This class provides techniques and skills on how to replace negative self-talk with empowering affirmations and action steps to support you in overcoming depression and living a fulfilling life.  Receive support from others and have a safe place to learn to improve your well-being.

Relax & Renew Yoga (Relaxation Yoga)

Recommended for:
     •    Newcomers to the practice of yoga 
     •    Members recovering from a physically or emotionally stressful situation
     •    Students maintaining a steady restorative practice and ready to introduce gentle movement to their routine

The most effective medicine for stress is deep relaxation. We keep the pace slow and soothing in this class as we focus on releasing tension from the body while tranquilizing the overactive mind. Relax & Renew is a calming combination of stimulating breath work, supported restorative poses, subtle sequence of movement, and satisfying holds that will encourage the gentle opening of the body and the regeneration of the spirit.

Power of REST Yoga (Restorative Yoga)

Recommended for:
     •    Every. Body. Truly!
     •    Members who currently deal with or would like to prevent chronic pain, injury, stress, and/or restlessness
The goal of a restorative practice is to achieve the complete, nourishing stillness that promotes the healing of body, mind and spirit. Students will cultivate the Power of REST as they are guided toward a meditative state through a series of passive, peaceful poses. This practice requires no effort as we utilize various combinations of supportive props to do the work for us. The experience of becoming one with our bodies and breath in stillness provides the healing quietude need for the systems of the physical body and the energy centers of the subtle body to regain their optimum potential.

Stress Management, Coping and Relaxation Skills

Do you feel stressed out and tense too much of the time. Learn how to cope with and manage stress in an effective manner.  Learn techniques for reducing stress and increasing your ability to problem-solve, relax and enjoy life.  Receive support from others as you find more peace.


Overcoming Anxiety, Fears and Phobias

Fear and anxiety can have a long-lasting effect in our lives.  Anxiety can lead to a debilitating state of worry or panic and can prevent us from fully enjoying life and living in the present. Learn to sift through these thoughts and negative emotions and replace them with healthy coping skills.  Learn the cause of anxiety and fear and what to do about it.  Receive support from others as you become empowered and motivated to have a well-balanced life free of the chains of fear and anxiety.

Self-Empowerment, Setting Goals and Positive Choices

Having the mind cluttered and bogged down can be overwhelming and can cause a sense of inadequacy.  Setting goals in any area of your life ignites motivation, creates value in yourself, and gives you peace of mind.  Learn to empower yourself and learn strategies to set and achieve your goals.

Healing through Art

Let your creative juices flow in our open art studio!  Creating art gives people a sense of control, purpose, and accomplishment when life circumstances leave them feeling powerless.  Use this nonjudgmental space for whatever creative process fits your needs.  You do not need to be an artist to participate.  Supplies will be provided, but you are always welcome to bring your own.

Negativity, Self-Acceptance and Self-Esteem

We live in a culture where we tend to value the opinions of others more than our own, and we tend to base our self-worth on how we measure up against what society tells us to be.  This leads to negative self-talk, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, and so much more.  Learning how to accept ourselves, flaws and all, is a liberating, empowering experience; fostering overall health and well-being.  Receive support from others as you learn to accept yourself and confront negative beliefs.

Adapting to Transitions and Changes

It has been said “the only thing that is certain is change” and yet change can be very stressful.  Being resistant to transition and unable to adapt to change can lead to stress, stagnation, and anxiety.  Learn to embrace changes and eliminate unnecessary worry, open opportunities, generate personal growth and create resilience.  Receive support from others as you learn strategies for adapting and successfully managing transitions.

Meditative Yin Yoga (Meditation/Yin Yoga)

Recommended for:
     •    All levels of practitioners
Meditative Yin offers healing on a holistic level. We utilize the tension-releasing trio of static poses that cradle our connective tissues, meditative techniques that reduce anxiety and stress, and deep breathing that nourishes our entire system. Students will discover a lasting sense of satisfaction, as this practice promotes flexibility of both body and mind.

Mindfulness Meditation

Recommended for:

     •    Members interested in beginning or growing their meditation practice
     •    All levels of practitioners

This class offers guidance toward a deeper awareness of our environments, both internal and external. The focus of Mindfulness Meditation is learning how to find stillness and tranquility in most situations so that we can respond with mindfulness, ease and control to the stressors of our daily lives.

Controlling One’s Emotions and Anger

Do you find yourself often angry and upset?  Do you yell at those closest to you and then feel bad about it?  Learn how to recognize and identify what makes you have these reactions, and to take action to calm down and deal with the situation in a productive way.  Receive support in learning how to manage your emotions appropriately.

Succeeding in Marriage & Relationships

Discover how to listen generously and speak clearly with your partner. Build intimacy and boost your self-esteem by learning relationship strengthening tools. Learn how to stay connected through high-stress situations and support one another during phase of life transitions. You may take this course alone or with your partner.

Successful Parenting Strategies

As children grow older, they will go through phases.  It is not always obvious what to do to handle them.  Parenting classes help parents understand the role that they play in their child’s behavior, why children behave the way they do and what to do about it.  Receive support in taking the steps to having a harmonious home life.

Coping with Traumatic Events and PTSD

Sometimes bad things happen to us.  When they do, it is sometimes difficult to cope with these events.  Sometimes you may react in a way that you do not understand.  Learn what types of reactions are normal.  Learn to cope with and understand your reactions to traumatic events. Learn to move forward and heal from the traumatic experience.  Receive support from others as you learn and rebuild.


Coping with Separation and Divorce

Divorce and separation are very difficult experiences.  Most people make mistakes along the way.  Learn how to be more successful and heal from the process.  Learn how to communicate with your ex-partner in a more effective way.  Learn how to heal emotions that have been damaged.  Learn how to move on.  Receive support from others as you heal.


Coping with Grief and Loss

Losing someone you love is one of the most difficult experiences that can happen.  The pain is sometimes unbearable.  Learn how to cope effectively and begin the healing process.  Learn that your emotions are normal and follow a predictable grieving process.  Learn how to heal from the loss and reestablish your life without dismissing your loved one.  Receive support from others as you heal.


Procrastination and Time Management

How many times have you created more problems for yourself by forgetting an appointment, or waited until the last minute to complete a project?  Learn time management skills that will allow you to take control of your life.  Learn to accomplish more, reduce your stress and anxiety levels, and lead to a more successful life.  Receive support from others as you take charge of your life.

Finding Your Voice and Purpose

Knowing the purpose of your life helps you live a more meaningful existence.  Learn to live each day to the fullest, because you know who you are and where you’re going.  Learn to know yourself and live a life that's true to your core values. Receive support from others as you find yourself.

Teen Life Skills

Traditional education rarely addresses the skills necessary for teens to navigate through life, and it is assumed that these skills are taught in the home or community.  This creates a gap, leaving our youth to fend for themselves as they transition into adulthood.  Learn life skills that empower teenagers’ lives and help teens navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of adolescence.  Receive support from others as teens grow and become adults.

Ebb & Flow Yoga (Gentle Flow Yoga)

Recommended for:
     •    Members wanting to try yoga, but not knowing where or how to start
     •    Students just beginning their yoga journey or becoming acquainted with a first level practice
     •    Intermediate students looking to refine their practice
Ebb & Flow is a gently moving sequence that fuses pranayama (breathing technique), a slower pace of flow and an ongoing exploration of asana (the physical practice). Prepare to embark on a journey of inquiry and self-love as we observe how each pose manifests in our individual forms. As a precursor to our Viny Vibe class, time will be spent breaking down Sun Salutations and other key components of a strong vinyasa practice.

Viny Vibe Yoga (Vinyasa Flow Yoga)

Recommended for:
     •    Beginning students who are comfortable at Level 1 and looking to advance their practice
     •    Intermediate students comfortable at Level 2
This Vinyasa-based class is best suited for yoga practitioners at the first and second level. We focus on using pranayama (breath) and asana (movement) to cultivate strength, flexibility and stamina. The general pace of this uninterrupted flow is kept quick and lively and occasionally incorporates the holding of static poses for endurance-building and education of form

Coping with Obsessive Thoughts and Compulsions (OCD)

Do you have racing thoughts that just won't quit.  Do you have behaviors that you do over and over and can't seem to stop them.  Learn how to stop these thoughts and behaviors when they interfere with your normal life.  Gain an understanding of why you obsess about things or do those behaviors.  Break free from obsessive thoughts and compulsions.  Receive support from others as you change.


Coping with Bipolar Disorder

Does it seem that one minute you're on top of the world and the next minute you're depressed.  Learn techniques to stabilize your emotions end your life. Learn why certain patterns of behavior contribute to mood swings and why other patterns have a stabilizing tendency.  Receive support from others as you stabilize your life.


Coping with Eating Disorders

Have eating disorders plagued you?  Do you obsess about food, eating, dieting or exercising. Learn how to have a healthy relationship with food and with your body.  Learn how to accept and nurture your body into proper healthy eating patterns that will allow you to be healthy and enjoy your life without obsessing over your body image, eating, or exercise.  Receive support from others as you heal.


Developing Friends and Social Connections

Humans are social creatures by nature.  Our overuse of technology can negatively affect our ability to genuinely connect with others and we can end up feeling lonely.  Learn to make good friends and expand your social network while preventing loneliness and isolation.  Receive support from others and create connections.


Science has proven that there is a direct connect between body and mind.  Stress is often described as physical tension in the shoulders, headaches, etc., while anxiety attacks makes your heart race, and so on.  Yoga as a mind-body exercise increases awareness, supports focus, and boosts emotional health.
